And Then What?

August 16, 2007 / by soultrawler

Oh, you might as well reconcile yourself to the fact that I'm forever hooked on these silly google ads, LOL!  This is the latest one:

Just reading the title, I thought it was a site that was going to give you "10 Steps To Memory Healing," or "The 12 Step Program to Overcoming Depression."

Well.  Then I read the next sentence and thought, wait a minute, when we expire, EVERYbody leaves their thoughts and memories behind!   You know, the old saying, "You can't take it with you."  Your home, your car, your carcass, your thoughts...all of it stays behind like my German mom's family's possessions when they had to up 'n flee the impending massacre by the Soviets at the end of WW2.

But the weird ending, "Letter From Beyond" really took the cake.  I envisioned some sort of phantom screed floating in on the gathered family as they munch on their Thanksgiving turkey together, and a Marlowesque voice reading it out as it hovers above the table.  You know, revenge-from-the-grave sort of thing.

In fact, this is something of a cousin to the email program I posted about recently.  You write about memories that you cherish, or whatever, and you can post photos and images, and then, well, once you've moved on to the next stage of existence, this company will send out your letter to the designated recipients.  Seems like you could save $$$ just by doing all this yourself, in person, before you die.

But then, I guess  that would lack the requisite dramatic effect...

I would have to say that it would lack something in the drama dept to do and say it all before we die. I have started a book of letters for my oldest daughter so she would know things about me that she may not know otherwise (my "I am more confident when the pen is my tongue" gig), but I can't imagine having something delivered to my girls after my death. I would also want to keep the big letter a secret too, eh, so that would leave me to wonder who would notify the "company" that I had died. (you've read my blog--this is how my mind works).
