Now, my very first thought was: try using a square pencil to get a feeling for how uncomfortable this type of knitting needle would be. But on a more abstract level, having grown up in the 60's, I had to chuckle @ the thought that even knitting needles might have various levels of prestige. No doubt, non-square knitters, those who are really hip and "Green," would use only needles manufactured in Nicaragua from trees grown on Sandinista-run kolkozes. The irony is: prized knitting needles made from ivory, used by our great-grandmothers in Victorian times, those would be disdained today for trendy political reasons.
Ah yes, the pull of all things proletarian...
