Symptomatic

December 29, 2007 / by soultrawler

A young Mexican couple sat down right next to me on the short wooden bench @ the laundromat.  While they're jabbering away in Spanish, their cute little son (who'd obviously only newly learned to walk) toddles over to me and starts fingering the pages in the book I'm reading.  Tickled @ that early sign of interest in the printed word, and trying to encourage it, in his own language I say, "Yes!  Books are fun!  Reading is interesting!"  At that, his mother looks at me with an expression of incredulousness mixed with contempt and asks (in Spanish), "You really like to read?!"

Most people can't read the subtitles on foreign movies. Except on the NYC subway, you risk lynching for reading. The local SWAT team takes care of dangerous radicals who have overdue library books.[LOL]

Nor, for that matter, the name of the cereal they eat. [THUMBDOWN]

"Swat team"---[LOL][LOL] But you make a very astute point there, my friend: the authorities indeed strain gnats and swallow camels.[MAD]

What would be even better is if there were hordes of mentors living South of the Border who could teach the whole populace a love of not only reading and writing, but of excellence in general.

Thomas Sowell (they guy I mentioned to you at one of your posts) wrote about the Germans who started colonies in Brazil (I think this was in the 19th century): first thing they did when they cleared the jungle of enough space? Build schools! Their kids were WAY more educated than the locals.
