Not for a Million Dollars!

September 14, 2007 / by soultrawler

So, if you're keeping up with my ole blog here, you know that I just posted on the joys and hassles of my little "cottage" (euphemism if you ever read one!).  Then, I read an entry over at Skyeblue's blog that made me think some more about living here.  Even with all the things that repeatedly irk the tar out of me, I'd rather live here than in some Manhattan penthouse.  I absolutely DESPISE city living!

Once, I broke my usual rule of not petsitting cats.  It was a friend of my mom's and I needed the $$$, plus the woman's complex sported a pool, which for me is a huge luxury, so I went.

Now, you need to know about the location of this condo:  it was down in San Diego's "Fashion Valley," where there's a mall, lots of other buildings, and worst of all:  24/7, the buzz and roar of 4 nearby freeways.  She lived on the 3rd floor, and there were only 2-3 TinkerToy type trees, token greenery.  The bldg. was part of a 4-some cluster of identical bldgs., surrounded by tar parking lots.

That was the first source of trouble for me.  The complicating factor was:  I watched TV at her house almost non-stop the first 3 days (at home, by choice, I don't even OWN a TV, nor have I ever in the past).  Why?  Bec. I was trying to get thru the tedium of handseaming several sweaters she had hired me to fashion with my knitting machine.  They needed to be finished by the time she returned from her trip.  Well, lemme tell YOU!  After 3 days there, and none of my usual rejuvenating greenery walks, I was climbing the walls!  All of a sudden, I understood why everybody in NYC regularly visits the shrink!  It's because we weren't designed to suffocate our souls and bodies in an asphalt jungle---a noisy one to boot!

So the 4th day, I drove 10 minutes up to College Heights, and took a restorative walk amongst those greenery-rich 40's and 50's houses.  That recalibrated me.

Well, you know i share your sentiments exactly about city living...it is soul deadening..the downside about living in the boonies is that everything is so far away. My dau. says "you need to live in a senior apt. so you won't have to worry about getting the grass mowed and repairing the plumbing etc." It may come to that, but long as possible I'll stay here in the woods.
    Enjoyed your blog! [THUMBUP][THUMBUP]

"Souldeadening"----PREEEEcisely, Skye! There's nothing like having the Creation all around one to keep one's perspective. You ever wonder why the Soviets were so anti-garden? Bec. greenery and critters and the sky remind the soul, way down inside, of its Creator and of our more-than-matter-ness. But a system like Communism (or consumerism, for that matter) doesn't want the subjects to remember their true nature, bec. that would clash with the system's Bed of Procrustes Project = making slaves out of everybody (in the case of the former, political drones, in the case of the latter, spendthrifts).
