In honor of the upcoming New Year, Buggs over at her blog listed a bunch of drinking quotes (funniest one: " I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy," altho in a way, it's sad, too). That reminded me of how during my gradeschool years, my mother and grandma inadvertently innoculated me against ever liking booze (except for pina coladas; I'll enjoy one of those every 4-5 years, when the mood hits me).
Every year, for birthdays and New Year's Eve, their tradition was to break open a bottle of champagne (the white kind, which was cheaper than the pink). This meant 5x/year, my grandma would roll out her question, "You want some too?" Desiring to be part of the festivities, I'd nod. She'd pour one inch worth of the stuff into the gorgeous etched champagne glasses my mom had bought in Germany. (They were only about an inch in diameter, but the long stem and goblet made it irresistible to fill them. These were the Barbie dolls of champagne goblets.) Then, we'd all clink, "Prost!" and sip. Invariably, I'd gag. Every time, I'd think, "Why do adults LIKE this stuff? Why do they always serve it for celebrations?" I'd never drink more than that one Ronsonol sip.
Fast 4ward to my highschool years. I'm living with my father and my first step"mother." One evening, about 3/4 of the way thru the meal, totally unwontedly (and he never did it again), Daddy pours each of us a potbellied wine goblet full of burgundy. It's so full, I can hardly bring it to my lips without spilling. I take a small sip. Next thing I know, I'm waking up to laughter. "You fell asleep! Hahaha!" (Daddy had a very ready sense of humor.) "Daddy, I don't like this stuff." Then I pushed the glass back over to his placemat.
Nope, that teen was impervious to the lure of liquor. But, now, those huge Archway choc. chip cookies? Those were her fix each day after school...

after I caught them sneaking a smoke--I made them smoke till they got sick--sounds cruel, and I wouldn't do it today--but tho they may have other bad habits, smoking isn't one of them to this day.
PS I love pina coladas-even just the mix from the bottle is good, without adding the rum! [THUMBUP][THUMBUP]
